Molasses Popcorn Balls

Here's a recipe that appears in my book "Handwritten Recipes."

Molasses Popcorn Balls

¾ cup water

1½ cups molasses

1½ cups light brown sugar

1 tablespoon vinegar

¼ teaspoon baking soda

⅛ teaspoon cream of tartar

¾ cup butter

1 teaspoon vanilla

3 quarts popcorn

Mix first six ingredients in large saucepan. Place over low heat and stir until sugar is dissolved. Bring to boiling and cook slowly until it will form a soft ball. Add butter and cook until hard ball stage. Add vanilla and corn.

Form into balls.

Makes 18 to 24 balls.

Found in "New Magic in the Kitchen" (no author). Published by Borden, no date; circa 1940s.

On pinterest I put in the search of "molasses popcorn balls" trying to find one that resembled my mom's totally yummy treat she used to make for us before watching Disney on Sunday nights. When what did I find....a pic of MY MOM's recipe in her own writting. My face flushed immediately. My mom passed away this past October and for many years prior to that she had dementia and it stoll her life. She had this hand written collection of recipes. That collection I cherished, it represented who she was as a figure in my life. Cookie was the center of her life and she had always enjoyed it. It was the center of all our bonding. With her dimensia, losing pieces of her...the collection became disheveled. From my understanding her cat had been mischevious and somhow disrupted a pile of magazenes, books and her collection...and from that point where the recipes went were a mystery. I am hoping that I may have your original copy, in her handwritting of this molasses popcorn ball recipe and if you could let me know if you have found any others that resemble to be of the same person? All her collection was written on the same paper if that makes it any easier to distiguish. How can we get in touch! Brenda Westcom, Bakersfield, Vt
