Babe Ruth Cookies

Recipe for "Babe Ruth Cookies."

1 egg
1 1/3 c flour
1/2 tea salt
3/4 c white sugar
1/2 tea soda
1/2 tea vanilla
1/2 c butter
2 - 5 cent bars, cut (I think they are probably referring to Baby Ruth candy bars)

Cream short (no mention of shortening above?) and sugar, beat in egg and other ingredients. Chill and bake 10-12 minutes at 375

Found in "Portrait of Jennie" by Robert Nathan. Published by Knopf, 1968.

The shortening would be the butter. My gram always called any fat in a recipe the shortening. Like true shortbread cookies are made with butter as only fat. Or at least that is what I would think.;>

This brought back memories. The shortening is the 1/2 cup butter. Butter and shortening and oleo and margarine were all interchanged back in the day. And the 5 cent bar was the regular sized candy bar, not a small bar.
